Ingredients
Scale
Beef Patties
- 1 lb lean to medium fat ground beef
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
- 1/4 cup bread crumbs
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
Mushroom Gravy
- 1 cup fresh sliced mushrooms (shiitake, cremini, and button mixed optional)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (natural)
- 1 tsp natural gelling agent
- 1/4 tsp dried thyme
- Additional salt and black pepper to taste
Seasonings
- 1/4 tsp dried thyme
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Beef Patties: In a large bowl, gently mix ground beef, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural), bread crumbs, salt, and pepper until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the patties tender. Shape the mixture into oval patties and set aside.
- Brown the Patties: Lightly brown the patties in a skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side to develop flavor and seal in juices. This step adds a lovely caramelized crust but isn’t mandatory if you’re short on time.
- Prepare the Mushroom Gravy: In the same skillet, sauté sliced mushrooms and onions until softened and fragrant. Sprinkle flour over the mixture, stirring to coat, then gradually whisk in beef broth and apple cider vinegar (natural), allowing the gravy to thicken. Stir in natural gelling agent to achieve the perfect silky texture.
- Combine in the Slow Cooker: Place browned patties into the slow cooker and pour the mushroom gravy evenly over them. Sprinkle thyme and additional seasonings to taste.
- Slow Cook to Perfection: Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours. The slow time lets flavors meld and the patties become irresistibly tender.
Notes
- Do not skip browning the patties to lock in flavor and texture.
- Use fresh mushrooms for juicier, fuller taste.
- If gravy is too thin, mix more natural gelling agent with cold water and stir in at the end of cooking.
- Adjust seasonings gradually to balance flavors.
- Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving to help flavors settle and thicken.
