Description

Enjoy soft, fluffy Orange Rolls bursting with fresh citrus flavor. These sweet, tender rolls topped with a luscious orange glaze are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a delightful snack with bright, natural ingredients and a comforting plant-based twist.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp fresh orange zest
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup plant-based milk, warmed
  • ⅓ cup fresh orange juice
  • 5 tbsp plant-based butter, melted

Filling

  • 3 tbsp plant-based butter, softened
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp fresh orange zest (or 1 tbsp ground cinnamon for cinnamon twist)

Orange Glaze

  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp fresh orange juice
  • 1 tsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • ½ tsp natural gelling agent

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Warm the plant-based milk until just warm to the touch. Dissolve the active dry yeast with a pinch of sugar and let it activate. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, salt, and orange zest. Slowly add the yeast mixture, fresh orange juice, and melted plant-based butter, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead and Let Rise: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  3. Shape the Rolls: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a 12×9 inch rectangle. Spread softened plant-based butter evenly over the dough. Sprinkle sugar and additional orange zest (or cinnamon if preferred) across the surface. Roll the dough tightly from the long side and cut into equal portions.
  4. Second Rise: Arrange the rolls in a greased baking dish, spacing them slightly apart. Cover and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffed up.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and cooked through, avoiding overbaking to keep them soft and fluffy.
  6. Prepare the Orange Glaze: While baking, whisk together powdered sugar, fresh orange juice, vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural), and natural gelling agent gently heated to form a smooth glaze. Drizzle generously over warm rolls right after baking for a glossy citrus finish.

Notes

  • Always use fresh orange zest for intense aroma and flavor.
  • Adjust flour or plant-based milk slightly to achieve a soft dough; some stickiness is acceptable but avoid overly wet dough.
  • Keep the dough warm and draft-free during rising for best results.
  • Use a sharp knife or dental floss to slice rolls cleanly without squishing.
  • Apply glaze while rolls are still warm for better absorption and a glossy top.
