Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm plant-based milk
  • 2 1/4 tsp yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup plant-based butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Filling

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup plant-based butter, softened

Red Frosting

  • 1/2 cup plant-based butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp beetroot powder (natural)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (natural)
  • 1/4 tsp natural gelling agent
  • 12 tbsp plant-based milk (optional, to adjust consistency)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Activate the yeast by dissolving it in warm plant-based milk with a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy. In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, and sugar. Add the yeast mixture and melted plant-based butter, stirring until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1 ½ hours until doubled in size.
  2. Make the Filling: While the dough rises, combine brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and softened plant-based butter in a bowl. Mix until you achieve a spreadable paste for the filling.
  3. Roll and Fill: Once risen, roll the dough on a floured surface into a 12×16 inch rectangle. Spread the cinnamon sugar filling evenly over the dough, reaching every corner. Carefully roll the dough from the long side to form a tight log.
  4. Slice and Proof: Cut the log into 12 equal slices. Arrange the slices in a greased baking pan with cut sides facing up. Cover loosely and let them proof for 30-45 minutes until puffed.
  5. Bake the Rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and let cool slightly before frosting.
  6. Prepare the Red Frosting: Whip together softened plant-based butter, powdered sugar, beetroot powder, vanilla extract, and natural gelling agent until smooth and spreadable. Add plant-based milk if needed to adjust consistency.
  7. Frost and Serve: Generously spread the red frosting over the warm cinnamon rolls, allowing it to melt slightly into all crevices. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Notes

  • Ensure plant-based milk is warm but not hot to properly activate yeast.
  • Knead the dough thoroughly to develop gluten for a fluffy, elastic texture.
  • Roll dough to an even thickness for consistent baking and filling distribution.
  • Do not skip the second rise after slicing for light, airy rolls.
  • Use fresh beetroot powder for the best natural red color and subtle sweetness in frosting.
