Scale
Dough Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon natural baking powder
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup plant-based buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (natural)
For Frying
- Vegetable oil (enough for deep frying, about 2 inches deep)
For Finishing
- Powdered sugar (plant-based), for dusting
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, natural baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, mix the plant-based buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract (natural). Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until a soft dough forms. Be careful not to over-mix to keep the dough light and airy.
- Let the Dough Rest: Cover the dough with a clean cloth and allow it to rest for 10 to 15 minutes. This resting period allows the flour to absorb moisture fully, resulting in a tender and airy beignet.
- Heat the Oil: Pour vegetable oil into a deep skillet or frying pan to a depth of about 2 inches. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches approximately 350°F (175°C), using a kitchen thermometer to maintain temperature for optimal frying.
- Shape and Fry the Beignets: Lightly flour a clean surface and roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into squares or your preferred shapes using a knife or cookie cutter. Carefully place 3-4 pieces into the hot oil, frying each side for 2-3 minutes or until puffed and golden brown.
- Drain and Dust: Remove the cooked beignets using a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. While still warm, generously dust with plant-based powdered sugar for a classic sweet finish.
Notes
- Use room temperature plant-based buttermilk for better dough consistency.
- Mix the dough until just combined to avoid tough beignets.
- Keep frying oil steady at 350°F to prevent greasy or undercooked beignets.
- Fry in small batches to avoid crowding and temperature drops in the oil.
- After frying, cover beignets with a clean towel for a few minutes to retain softness inside.
